Now that we’re on the brink of spring releasing us from the grips of the worst cold and flu season, we’re still bombarded with viruses and bacteria that tip-off our balance.
Good news is that there are things you can do to boost your immune system so that it can better fight off any offending intruders.
By making sure you eat well, avoid foods that are high in sugar, saturated fat, salt and processed ingredients as well as drinking enough fluids, you can boost your immunity but it can also help you lose some weight (which also helps your immunity).
If we eat lots of unprocessed foods that contain high levels of nutrients and fibre, we’re more likely to have a strong immune system that can stop intruders before they make us sick.
Eat the rainbow
Eating the rainbow every day and aiming to choose many different fruits and vegetables, at least 5 portions a day but better still if you can get to 8. Not only will this help your immune system get as strong as it possibly can, but you will also feel energised because you’re consuming lots of gut-friendly fibre.
As Mums, we are always busy and short on time so cooking from scratch, using fresh vegetables and fruits seems like a distant dream to many. Being responsible for picky or fussy toddlers who are not wanting anything fresh or anything that has colour in it doesn’t make it easy, I know. What they would naturally go for are beige, bland foods that come in a packet. Sound about right?
What can you do then?
It may sound like a difficult task at first, but get the kiddies involved. Shop together, plan and prepare food together. Only offer vegetables and fruits as snacks (not buying any convenience options makes it easier) – be prepared to let them try new foods/ingredients for at least 10-15 times before deciding to stop offering this particular ingredient – for a while anyway.
Immunity boosting foods come in many shapes and sizes (and colours) so you don’t have to feed your family kale, ginger and lemon to get a bucketload of nutrients in that can help the body fight off intruders. Unless of course, your favourites are these 3 things.
Here are 3 simple ways you can get more immunity boosters into your family’s diet:
- Start the day with a smoothie (you can throw in ginger, kale and lemon 😉 if you want) and blend in oats & seeds for zinc, fibre and slow-releasing energy.
- Eat soups and use at least 3 different vegetables in these and boost the protein content by including beans or lentils in the recipe. **
- Make your own snacks (you can toss in lots of fruits and veggies)
** Soups are an easy way to increase your vegetable intake and it’s great for weight loss too as you consume a lot of liquid as well so you feel fuller & more fulfilled.
