Taru Merikoski

ArcticNut Nutrition Coach

Hi Taru,

Tell us about the Services you offer?

I offer coaching sessions to mums, mumpreneurs and mums-to-be who want to improve their energy levels, feel more balanced and lose some weight while eating delicious and inspiring food.

How did you come up with the idea and what motivated you to go for it?

Through my own health struggles, especially with IBS, I realised that there is so much that can be done about one’s wellbeing – and so much of it has to do with food… I was able to help myself find a balance and feel so much better, and I wanted to be able to help others too. So almost 5 years ago, I decided to change direction and start studying to become a Nutrition Adviser, and haven’t looked back since.

What do you love about running your own business and what do you find hard?

I absolutely love the fact that when you run your own business, only the sky is the limit with your imagination – and there isn’t much you can’t do if you really set your mind to it and work hard. What I’ve found hard is the lack of supportive colleagues around… running your own business can be a lonely job sometimes. But this is the reason I started a Mums CoWorking Community here in Kingston, to create a supportive network for other mums who run their own businesses.

What kind of Boss Mum are you and how do you manage the juggle?

O.r.g.a.n.i.s.i.n.g. is my life! I’m an odd combination of type-A organiser and spontaneous adventurer 🙂

Do you have a favourite app or work tool you think everyone should know about?

I think Buffer makes life so much easier… it’s great that you can just schedule your Social Media and then forget about it for a while 🙂

How do you define success?

I feel fulfilled, am able to use my creative mind for good – and that it pays the bills.

What is a normal day in your life like?

I have 3 ‘normal’ working days when our son, 2 years, is at a childminder – but even these days are quite a mixture of locations – I work in a different location each day of the week – which keeps things interesting 🙂 I get almost a full day of working time from our Thursday CoWorking session – as we have a créche for the little ones to play in while us Mums concentrate on building our business empires.

What has been a particular highlight for you since starting your business?

I’m so thankful and thrilled to know that I’ve been able to help so many other people find their balance and feel healthier and happier – I consider that such a privilege.

What’s the best advice you’ve ever been given?

This was from my late grandmother, who was always my biggest fan and soul sister; ‘focus on what you can do, not what you can’t do.’

What advice would you give someone who was thinking about setting up their own business?

Do it! But. Take. Your. Time. And don’t try do it all yourself!

What is your favourite Social Media platform and how has it helped in your success?

I think I like Facebook the most… just because I think it’s the simplest to use. And even that’s not easy!

Who inspires you?

My husband, my mum and my fellow mumpreneurs. I just feel so inspired when I’m surrounded by people who work hard on what they believe is right – and just get on with it – I’d describe it as ‘sisu’ = translation from Finnish is something along the lines of; stoic determination, tenacity of purpose, grit, bravery, resilience and is used by Finns themselves to express their national character.

What was your dream job growing up?

As long as I can remember, I always wanted to become a helper… to help anyone and anything that needed support to become whole again. At one time it was a vet, then it was a psychologist, teacher and then a coach – which is where I’m now – I feel like I’m home. 🙂

Tell us 3 facts about you…
  1. I’m Finnish and my native language is Suomi. We’ve been voted the happiest people on the planet twice in a row now.
  2. I’ve been with my husband for almost 15 years, married for over 8 and we have 1 little boy, now 2 years old + 2 miniature poodle girls, our furry babies.
  3. My grandmother was an entrepreneur to the core and so is my dad – which explains a lot about my character, I’m an incurable inventor and business mind. Wherever I look, I see business opportunities and possibilities for positive change.
What do you enjoy most about being a part of Mama Tribe?

I love the fact that I belong to a huge community of like-minded Mums who know what it’s like running a home, taking care of a family, operating a business and being a spouse. Plus I love the positive approach you have to the whole community aspect!

Thanks for giving us an insight into life behind ArcticNut Nutrition Taru, we love having you as a Member of the Tribe.
