Tell us about your business and the type of products you sell?
I set up brave bear tee co in August 2020. I make and sell a range of T-shirt’s, jumpers and hoodies for adults and children with motivational slogans to support positive mental health. My products are all made with 100% organic cotton and recycled polyester making them eco-friendly and sustainable. They are also Fair Trade and certified Vegan.
I source my T-shirt’s from a company that believes in building healthy environmental practices and greater respect for the planet. I use my iPad to create designs and bring them to life using a Cricut machine to cut the vinyl which I then press onto my products with a heat press. Each product is lovingly handmade to a very high standard and packaged using recycled materials. My T-shirt’s, jumpers and hoodies are super soft, feel great and very long-lasting.
How did you come up with the idea and what motivated you to go for it?
I’ve been working as a full-time mum for the previous few years and after my youngest child started school I felt a little lost. I have a background in early years education and I have always been passionate about mental health and wellbeing. I was brainstorming ideas which would allow me to work from home around my children that would also bring together my creativity and passion for mental health. It was my lovely sister of Lisa Price Photography that actually came up with the idea of a clothing business. As soon as I heard it I loved it and I’ve not looked back!
What is your best selling product?
My best selling product so far are my lovely soft 100% organic cotton jumpers in cream pink. The designs vary but the cream pink jumper with Rose gold writing has been so popular and I can totally see why; it’s really stunning.
What do you love about running your own business and what do you find hard?
I love the flexibility it gives me and the ability to work around my children. I love that I’m around every morning to still do the school run and there again to pick them up. I try and get my work done during the day but I often spend evenings working too; it’s hard to switch off sometimes.
I also love that I’m spreading a message if positivity with my products and it’s putting a smile of people’s faces. I’ve had lots of messages from lovely customers who have said my honesty and openness has really encouraged them with their own struggles and mental health which means the world to me. I love helping people.
What kind of BossMum are you and how do you manage the juggle?
At the moment I’m just winging it. I’m just going with the flow and taking everything as it comes. I think as I (hopefully) get busier I’ll need to be a bit more organised but I’m managing to keep on top of everything at the moment and I have a good balance of work and home.
What surprising lessons have you learned along the way?
The most surprising thing so far is how much everyone loves my products. It’s been really overwhelming and the positive feedback about my products and the quality has been fantastic. I honestly didn’t expect it to be so successful so soon. It’s really taken me by surprise.
How do you define success?
What has been a particular highlight for you since starting your business?
My biggest highlight so far was hitting 100 sales in my Etsy store within a couple of weeks of opening. I still can’t believe it.
What’s next for your business?
The next big thing for my business will be the release of my Christmas items. I will be releasing some new products in new colours/designs. I can’t wait. I love Christmas!
What’s the best advice you’ve ever been given?
Don’t give up! Keep trying, do your best, think positivity and you will succeed.
What advice would you give someone who was thinking about setting up their own business?
Go for it! If it’s your dream and you are passionate about it then give it a go. There is no failure in trying.
What is your favourite Social Media platform and how has it helped in your success?
Instagram. I’ve only just figured out how to use it properly but I’m loving it at the moment. I love interacting with everyone and being able to post pictures of my products.
