Tell us about your business and the type of products you sell?
Hiorns Hats is an award winning Warwickshire based millinery brand based in Warwickshire. It’s a one man band run by me, Lucy and I absolutely love doing it. I specialise in bespoke headpieces for women of all ages and my main aim is to create wearable piece of art that my clients feel beautiful in.
Each Hiorns Hat is made entirely by me following an initial consultation in which the clients outfit and occasion are discussed. This way I can ensure all of my pieces are as individual as the ladies who wear them. I started Hiorns Hats about 4 years ago and up until now have been running it alongside a full time job.
How did you come up with the idea and what motivated you to go for it?
I got into millinery after going on a £25 groupon course. This was about 6 years ago and was purely for fun. Little did I know that it would grow into a business and that it would become such a big part of my life.
What do you love about running your own business and what do you find hard?
I love making hats, meeting clients and being free to create the products that I want, when I want. I hate doing the accounts because i find it difficult and boring and I find marketing myself and the business hard. My aim this year is to find my “voice” and nail the PR stuff.
What kind of Boss Mum are you and how do you manage the juggle?
I’m good at spinning lots of plates and am never afraid to put in the hours needed to make everything happen. This sometimes ends up in me being very tired but I thrive under pressure and often produce my best work when I feel ready to crack.
Do you have a favourite app or work tool you think everyone should know about?
VSCO the photo editing app is great. I always use it to edit my pictures for social media.
What has been a particular highlight for you since starting your business?
I entered the Midland fashion Awards in 2018 and was delighted to get selected for the finals in October. There was a catwalk on the night and 6 stunning models walked in my hats which was such an incredible sight. It was an absolutely brilliant night which completely pushed me out of my comfort zone and opened my eyes to the fashion world but the real cherry on the cake was being awarded with the prize for Accessory Designer of the Year.
What’s next for your business?
I’m hoping to grow the business each year and to grow my customer base through better marketing and collaborations.
What is your favourite Social Media platform and how has it helped in your success?
Instagram is my personal favourite but Facebook is actually better for my business because the majority of my customers are 50+ and tend to hang out there more.
