Norah‘s Brownies

Hi Leah,

Tell us about your business and the type of products you sell?

Norah’s Brownies is a ‘free from’, award winning bakery.  We deliver to your door a variety of goods including brownies, donuts and gifts boxes . We have vegan options and all our products are refined sugar free, dairy free and gluten free.

How did you come up with the idea and what motivated you to go for it?
I wanted to jazz up the boring brownie, they always looked a bit plain next to all the other baked goods!

What do you love about running your own business and what do you find hard?

The reason I set up my business is so that I could work flexible hours around my two girls.  What’s hard is that you never stop working in your mind.  There’s always a new product, another order, emails… Flexible has now become “all the time“!

What kind of BossMum are you and how do you manage the juggle?

I’m really fast at what I do, along side multi-tasking.

If you have ever worked with me you will know that I’m a bit like a Tasmanian devil! I think that’s how I’ve been managing to do this job for four years.

Do you have a favourite app or work tool you think everyone should know about?
Retouch is a great tool for me.  I will often snap a photo in the moment and then afterwards I’ll notice a stray petal or raspberry. With Retouch I can remove it straight away without having to go back and reshoot the picture – a total time saver!
How do you define success?

Paying your bills.  After two years you need to be looking at, “am I paying my self a wage each month on top of paying for over heads?”  My success is valued in being able to have a business that makes money.  The first two years there were no profits only draining our savings to pay the mortgage as I wasn’t making a salary.  I promise myself that I have built a business that pays the bills .

What has been a particular highlight for you since starting your business?

Highlights for me have been winning two Great Taste Awards.  They have definitely boosted my confidence. That and supplying brownies for the Queens Birthday!

Who inspires you?

Bold, intelligent, risk-taking, outspoken people who inform me and educate me. Without hate, without anger, just straight to the point , fact checked, informative non-bias people.

What was your dream job growing up?
I wanted to be a Blue Peter presenter.  I used to put food in bowls and pretend I was showing the country how to make something. I’m still waiting on the production team to turn up…!
Tell us 3 facts about you…
  1. I worked in fashion for eight years before I was a DT teacher.
  2. I am a Type 1 Diabetic.
  3. I play guitar, I used to do open mic nights in my student bar.
What do you enjoy most about being a part of Mama Tribe?

Running a business is lonely, being in a tribe of like minded mums takes away that isolation feeling.
