Tell us about your business and the type of products you sell?
Oohlala offers playfully expressive branding and beautifully refined websites for female entrepreneurs and startups.
How did you come up with the idea and what motivated you to go for it?
I’ve always wanted a career in design and taking the jump to self-employment was something I’ve always been working towards and when I decided I didn’t want the stress of a 9-5 anymore after maternity leave I just went for it.
What is your best selling product?
My best selling product is my branding package for startups. The process I go through for this package offers the perfect foundation for a brand to be built upon in the future.
What do you love about running your own business and what do you find hard?
I love the business owners I meet. They are interesting, creative and inspirational. Miles away from the corporate clients I used to deal with. I find not having a team to bounce ideas around with hard, not having someone to run to when I’ve hit a brick wall to give me some clarity.
What kind of BossMum are you and how do you manage the juggle?
Work has to be organised. I’m happy to wing motherhood but the business has to be documented with notes and calendar notifications to keep everything in place and wheels in motion!
What surprising lessons have you learned along the way?
I’m more resilient and confident than I ever gave myself credit for. I’m not sure if it’s come from becoming a mum but the comparison of things I take in my stride now e.g (client calls, presentations, public speaking etc) compared to when I was in the industry is huge.
Do you have a favourite app or work tool you think everyone should know about?
My favourite app is Agenda. It’s a note-taking app that syncs from my phone to my laptop. I have a project for each client and any phone call notes or important things go in there. Having it on my phone means I can add in ideas when they come to me too.
How do you define success?
For me it’s never been about the hard sales and numbers, success to me comes in the form of achieving the goals I have outlined for my business for the year ahead. This could range from launching a new package, partnerships or working on the business mechanics itself.
What is a normal day in your life like?
The juggle is real. My two full working days are Monday and Fridays. During the rest of the week, it’s about 2 hours over nap time (which I’m fully aware will probably disappear soon!) It’s so difficult to find the balance but currently, we’re managing! I work from home, usually on the sofa surrounded by books and pens and sketchbooks. We do have an office but I love to be comfortable and relaxed when I’m working. I don’t work when Hugo is awake as I need 100% focus and quiet to work.
What has been a particular highlight for you since starting your business?
My highlight was landing Anna Mathur as a client. Before I set up my business; I had a dream client list and she was at the very top, and by pure luck, she was the first client I landed – I think I was at the right place at the right time. Anna is amazing to work with, she’s high energy and helps so many people. The recommendations she has given me took my business from strength to strength in year one.
What’s next for your business?
Next for the business is education. Both for me and the client/customer. One of my goals is to educate business owners on the importance of their brand, the branding process and strategy and what it can really do to help their business.
What is your favourite Social Media platform and how has it helped in your success?
Instagram by far is my favourite, it’s simple quick and visual and it has really helped with getting Oohlala off the ground in year one.
What was your dream job growing up?
My dream job growing up was to work in design, I wasn’t sure which field of design I’d end up in – my degree is in Interior Design!
Tell us 3 facts about you…
Ooh, this is a toughie. Three facts… Okay
- I’m originally from Wales grew up there (Welsh is my first language!)
- When I was pregnant I craved sausages and ice cream.
- I’m the youngest of 6!
What do you enjoy most about being a part of Mama Tribe?
The Mama Tribe community is great, I’ve met so many inspirational ladies who are in similar positions, where you’re all figuring stuff out as you go along helping each other out. The work Danni does is amazing and it’s so nice to be a part of an ever-growing, changing and thriving community.
