Menstrual Health Awareness
We are &SISTERS…
…a feminine care brand with a conscience, talking periods, smashing taboos and supporting women. Our periods are natural, &SISTERS believes that feminine care should be too. We offer women a choice of 100% natural and ultra-reliable organic cotton products that are better for their bodies and better for our environment. Customers choose their own period products to match their needs and &SISTERS delivers direct to their door or desk! And, because no woman should be held back by her periods, we give 10% of our profits to tackling ‘period poverty’ around the globe.
The inspiration for creating a natural feminine care brand came after realising that most women are in the dark as to the products they use on a monthly basis. Mainstream brands tend not to list their ingredients and probably for good reason! They’re often made from non-breathable, non-biodegradable synthetic fibres. Having been a fan of organic cotton products for a while and never one to shy away from a challenge, a more natural and healthy period that was better for the body and the planet seemed a cause worth pursuing.
It was always the intention to build the brand’s proposition around the three pillars of health (body), the planet (eco-friendly), female empowerment and making a difference (social mission). The name itself embodies the idea of female unity and empowerment and the icon marque plays on the idea of both an infinite number of ‘sisters’ and the bond between women. It also lends itself naturally to both the brand ethos of ‘By Women, For Women’ and the tag-line “Sisters Helping Sisters”
We think it’s interesting that it’s taken so long for women to question what goes into their feminine care products.
Making ethical and sustainable choices has begun to cross-over into the areas of beauty and personal care. Women are becoming more focused on the naturalness and sustainability of the ingredients of the products that they use on or against their skin. We also think social media is having a really large part to play here by raising awareness of clean living and clean beauty and specifically of natural and organic products.
However, there’s still a long way to go. From research we commissioned last year we found that 80% of females believe (wrongly) that mainstream feminine care products are already made from cotton, when in fact the majority are made from synthetic fibres such as viscose. Unlike synthetic fibres, organic cotton is hypoallergenic, skin friendly, pH neutral, breathable, naturally soft and naturally absorbent. The ideal material for sensitive areas.
From the beginning…
… we have positioned &SISTERS as an ethical and sustainable healthy alternative to mainstream products but we also wanted to create a brand that was stylish and sophisticated, hence our colourful patterns.
These patterns have been designed by a young female designer, Eve Warren and we’re also using our packaging to give the opportunity to highlight other up-coming female designers.
We have a wide range of feminine care ranging from very light liners to larger more absorbent pads for medium to heavy flows (day/night time). We also have naked tampons© (without applicators) in handy handbag sizes of 6/8 and 9 to big packs of 25/35 and 40.
Don’t worry if naked tampons are not your cup of tea, we do biodegradable applicator tampons from very light to heavy flow. These also come in smaller packs of 14/16 or big packs of 28/30 and 32.
We’ve also taken on board other findings from our research.
Women were asking for both mixed absorbency packs and larger size packs and so we’ve included these in our range too. Our mixed packs of tampons and duo packs of pads have been selling especially well.
‘Personalise your period’ is another way to mix and match what you want for your unique flow and you can order this option monthly or quarterly.
Last but not least our very own nüdie© cup this comes in three different sizes:
- S/Teen – Perfect for users under of 18
- M – Perfect for if you are aged 18 to 30 and have not given birth vaginally
- L – Perfect if you have given birth vaginally or are over 30 years old.
We love what we do…
…and as women are becoming more conscious of the effects that store-bought products have on the environment and their bodies, we are starting to see a change.
This is where you come in. As a mum, a sister, an aunt, a grandmother, a friend or a teacher educate our girls on the change we need to put in place. Something as simple as changing to organic cotton period products or buying a nüdie cup can have such a huge impact. Know what you’re putting in your body and help a sister!
